More Hip Than Hippie #206 - TogetherGreen

TogetherGreen is an environmental alliance that connects aspiring leaders with inspiring ideas.

Last year, TogetherGreen Fellowships provided 40 of the nation's most promising conservationists with the means to turn their ideas into action. The Hipsters unearth details about the program from Judy Braus of the Audubon Society and Sean Miller of Earth Day Network. Also, Dori dodges jury duty, Val experiences Kindle Envy, and a listener gets a Major Award!

Beer and Chocolate:

Beer: Val found the ultimate breakfast beer! Pipeline Porter from Kona Brewing Co. is rich, smooth and made with 100% Hawaiian Kona coffee. That's right, beer and coffee--2 great tastes that taste great together!

Chocolate: Michelle in Australia seems to have hit the chocolate mother lode. Loving Earth Raw Organic Dark Chocolate is a sugar-free, gluten-free vegan delight, handmade in Melbourne. We're sending lots of Hipster love to our Aussie friends dealing with those horrible wildfires!

Hip News and Finds

Finds:

  • Val's Favorite Thing! You've got the music in you, now you can wear it on you! Vintage LP Vinyl Necklaces are laser-etched from those worn out albums of yesteryear. Choose from various groovy designs, including Dori's favorite: the 45 record adapter. (Ask your mom what a record is.)
  • Flame and Fortune. A UK company called EaKo lives up to its name with another brilliantly repurposed item: the decommissioned firehose. Half the profits from these blazing hot belts, bags, wallets and placemats go to a firefighters' charity.

Hip News
  • Idealism. Japan's Prime Minister is calling for a "Green New Deal" to counter both climate change and the economic downturn. Subarashii!
  • Gas tankard. Our good buddy Ken Grossman has done it again! Sierra Nevada Brewery has partnered with EFuel Corp. to make its own ethanol fuel from discarded beer yeast. Still working on belchanol.
Teenie Weenie Greenieā„¢

Valentine Daze. If you need sweets for your sweetie, make it a priority to choose at least one piece of Fair Trade chocolate. There are no calories in karma!

TogetherGreen

Do you know a promising conservationist? Tell him or her about TogetherGreen Fellowships! Recipients are awarded a $10,000 stipend to help launch a local environmental project. Learn the details of this exciting program from Judy Braus, VP of Education for the National Audubon Society, and Fellowship winner Sean Miller.

  • Together. The National Audubon Society and Toyota formed an alliance called TogetherGreen to advance conservation leadership. Their motto: Act Today, Shape Tomorrow.
  • Green. In its first year, TogetherGreen's projects have reached from inner cities to Appalachia, aiding people and wildlife in 24 states.
  • Fellowship. As a TogetherGreen Fellow, Sean Miller has overseen the installation of solar panels at a Washington DC school. He incorporated the project into his work as Director of Education at Earth Day Network.
  • Friends. Visit the TogetherGreen Facebook Fan Page.
Listener E-mails

  • Shout-outs! A huge Hipster Howdy to listener Jennifer (New Green Mama), who crafted these uber-cool cup cozies out of recycled sweaters! Also, thanks to It's the Little Thinks for the blog mention!
  • Michelle in Providence, RI wonders if she should buy a new composter while her old one "cooks", or if she's ready to get worms. Dori shudders.
  • Shannon in Minnesota shares her love for Sun Chips and Buffalo Games. Check her blog for more green companies.
  • Jenny in Canada (eh!) would like to try weaving with plastic bags, like the folks at WeaveZine.
  • Fon wants to represent for all the male Hipsters! He's still feeling a little confused about plastic trash bags. We're here to help.
  • Kate was surprised when her friends used "green" giftwrap for her bridal shower. Check out the photo of her cool newspaper bow in the forum.
  • Elizabeth in Colorado says she & her partner Catherine are finally caught up, after a few More Hip marathons. It's time to rate the beer & chocolate, girls...
