More Hip Than Hippie #105 - A Visit With Mama Rose

Mama Rose, a local radio celebrity, stops by for a visit to chat about some of her favorite recipes for the grill.

Beer and Chocolate:

Beer: Full Sail Pale Ale from Full Sail Brewery in Hood River, Oregon.

Chocolate: Narragansett dark chocolate with candied pecans, cranberries, and orange oil from Seeds of Change

Hip News and Finds

Finds:

  • A tale of global warming. Arctic Tale is a new movie that shows young polar bears and walruses struggling to reach adulthood in a melting Arctic.
News:
  • Go ahead, shop till you drop! Climate Counts, a non-profit organization, has rated 56 consumer companies, identifying leaders and laggers around the cause of global warming. The group hopes to inspire consumers to support corporations that take climate change seriously.
  • Google gets behind hybrids. Google has launched a new project called the RechargeIT initiative that aims to further the development of plug-in hybrid electric cars.
  • Walk a mile in his shoes. In a recent question-and-answer session, outgoing British Prime Minister Tony Blair revealed he has worn the same pair of leather shoes for the past 18 years.

Teenie Weenie Greenie

This week's Teenie Weenie Greenie comes from The Green Book and is to share your popcorn when you're at the movies instead of buying multiple cartons or bags. You'll save money and packaging. Americans today consume seventeen billion quarts of popcorn each year (54 quarts per person), 30 percent of which are eaten at movie theaters, sporting events, entertainment arenas, amusement parks, and other recreational centers. If half the people shared their popcorn, we could save the paper packaging for more than 2.5 billion quart-size servings.

A Visit with Mama Rose

Mama Rose talks vegetarian, grilling, and overall deliciousness. Check out her website Rose's Kitchen for great recipes and tasty ideas.

Healthy Egg Breakfast
Serves one or two.

  • Tbsp. olive oil.
  • One tomato, sliced.
  • One clove garlic, sliced.
  • Few torn leaves of basil, oregano or tarragon. Just one of these herbs.
  • Two eggs.
  • Parmesan cheese, grated

Heat the oil slightly, add the slices of tomatoes, garlic and herb, lower heat, and cook until the tomatoes are tender. Drop the eggs in one at a time, sprinkle with cheese, cover and cook on very low heat until desired doneness. So easy and delicious.

Pizza on the Grill

  • Low heated fire
  • One prepared pizza dough
  • Olive oil
  • Favorite topping
Brush one side of pizza dough with oil, place on grill and cook until lightly browned. Take the dough off of the grill, brush the uncooked side with olive oil. Turn the browned side up, and place toppings, return to grill, and cook covered until underside is lightly browned. Remove immediately and serve.

Suggestions for toppings:

  • Brie and mozzarella cheese with thinly sliced yellow and green zucchini with tarragon.
  • Freshly sliced tomatoes, garlic mozzarella cheese, oregano.
