Shout Outs!
Here's who's been talking about More Hip Than Hippie Lately. Thank You!

Finds and Hip News:

  • Found on AOL News, drivers curb use of gas as price goes up. Surprised anyone?
  • Eco Friendly Oregon Winemaker Earns Top Honor - this just in from listener Michael.
  • Listener Doug has been taking our Mileage Challenge and has discovered he's improved his mpg by 10%! Get your results in NOW so we can share the findings. If you've forgotten the details, here they are: Take the Mileage Challenge - the point is to demonstrate just how much driving habits make a difference in fuel efficiency.
Step 1. Track mileage for one tank with normal driving habits.
Step 2. Track mileage for the next tank while maximizing the amount of time your foot is not on either pedal.
Send your results to hip@greenfeet.com . Please have your results to us by May 1, 2006.
  • Val found this great 4 minute flash movie on climate that a green colleague produced. His name is Joel and he's the Founder of GreenBiz.com. It's great.

The Wine and Ice Cream
What? No Beer and chocolate?

Wine: Bonterra Vineyards Organic Cabernet - 2003
Ice Cream: Ben & Jerry's Black and Tan. Yes, we've been informed that they beat us to the punch. But does it live up to our expectations?

The Interview: Julia Butterfly-Hill

In the 90's
Many of you may remember the name Julia Butterfly Hill from the late 90's when Ms. Hill made the headlines by setting up camp within the branches of Luna - an old growth tree in the Northern California Redwoods. The two year experience resulted in Luna's preservation and the tree became a symbol for protection against the environmental damages of clear cutting our forests.

Once Julia came back down, she was bombarded with cameras, interviews and a lot of attention. She decided she wanted to make a difference in this world and has been touring and educating ever since. She founded the Circle of Life Foundation found at www.circleoflifefoundation.org where you'll find a lot of wonderful, useful information on how you can make a difference.

Here is their mission statement: Founded in early 1999 by Julia Butterfly Hill, Circle of Life activates people through education, inspiration and connection to live in a way that honors the diversity and interdependence of all life. We believe that you, yes you, make the difference in the world.

Julia is not your average activist. She's not about the negative - she's about being proactive and taking action. We thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and both of us felt a little more enlightened as we parted ways.

Listener Emails

  • Liz brought to our attention that not only Vanity Fair has a green issue out, so does Elle Magazine!
  • Liisa (yes, the one with two i's) informed us that IKEA takes batteries, rechargeable batteries, CFL's, cardboard and Styrofoam for recycling. Hot diggety! Check them out to see if there's a store near you. www.ikea.com. But don't tell Liisa - seems she has a bit of a shopping problem there!
  • Ding Ding - it's Kellie from San Francisco. Here's a link to an NPR story on the Dupont Teflon lawsuit. It's worth the 5 minute or so listen.
  • Jay reminded us what trendsetters we are (blush, blush) by pointing out a few articles. The Boston Globe published an article about green travel. He likes http://tidepool.org for environmental news.
  • You listeners are on top of things! We received several emails regarding Apple Computers Free Computer Take-Back Program. Kudos to Apple and to all of you for letting us know about it! Check out Apple for the skinny on the program: http://www.apple.com
