More Hip Than Hippie #163 - Electric Avenue

Do Val and Dori dream of electric cars? You bet! The Hipsters plug into the latest buzz about PHEV and EV models for the near future, and size up what's out there now.

Beer and Chocolate:

Beer: Hoegaarden, The Original Belgian White Beer. The name of this beer prompts a confession from Dori and Val concerning their unseemly nicknames for each other.

Chocolate: Lindt Edelbitter Mousse Blueberry- Lavender. Danke Schoen to listener Maile in Germany for providing the gooey goodness. Just don't ask us to read the label!

Hip News and Finds

Finds:

  • Dieting is the Pitts. Angelina Jolie is adopting...an all-organic diet! Guess she needs help to deal with her extra 7 ounces of baby weight.
  • Hipstah Montana. Celebuteen Miley Cyrus includes an eco-anthem on her new album, and you'll hear it at the end of the show. How can she rule the world if there isn't one left?
  • Vomit and dog poop and worms, oh my! We found a crazy fun site that lets you wreak havoc on a webpage without doing any real harm. Cheaper than therapy, right?

Hip News

  • Bit of a Sticky Wicket. In London, a protester got an extra minute of Gordon Brown's time by gluing himself to the Prime Minister's hand! Said the perp: "He can shake off my arm, but he cannot shake away climate change."

Teenie Weenie Greenieā„¢

Listener Celeste fondly recalls our tip about saving your coins in a jar, since she just cashed in about $70 worth! An added twist: some banks allow you to round your debits up to the nearest dollar, then save the difference for you. That's so money!

Electric Avenue

Do Val and Dori dream of electric cars? You bet! The Hipsters plug into the latest buzz about PHEV and EV models for the near future, and size up what's out there now. Do automakers take the technology seriously? Is the power grid ready to handle it? The answers may shock you!

  • Home Sweet Ohm. Americans say they're ready for plug-in hybrid cars, and the power grid isn't far behind.
  • Hero of Zero. The chief of Nissan Motors wants a pure electric car with zero emissions, and plans to start selling them in 2010.
  • Watt We Want. General Motors plans to release the Chevy Volt in 2010, and is working with Duke Energy to integrate PHEVs into the nation's grid.
  • Duh! Of course Toyota is in the mix, with an improved battery that gives you more yardage for your yen.
  • Now and ZENN. We run down CNN's list of 5 Electric Cars You Can Buy Now. Tesla invites you to be the first in the nation to get a speeding ticket in an EV!
Listener Emails

Holy Hybrids, you guys keep us entertained with your pithy e-mails (it's not a dirty word, look it up)! Keep 'em rolling in at hip@greenfeet.com. And don't forget to post articles, links, and gobs of your grey matter at our MHTH forum!

  • Stop it or you'll go blind! Val e-mailed herself again, this time with a story about how Congress is NOT trying to ban Twitter. We get to the twuth of the matter.
  • Paging Alfalfa! Listener Spanky (Mike) checks in from the road to tell us about swimming pools that use the power of ozone and UV light to stay clean. We'll bring Our Gang over for a swim!
  • Is that a bokashi in your yurt, or are you happy to see me? Molly-from-New-Zealand-living-in-Spain e-mailed from her yurt to tell us about the cool Japanese composter. Best part? No worms!
  • Heavenly Hipster. Can we get an Amen! Jessica took action at her huge church in Pittsburgh, which has now changed its wasteful ways. Way to spread the green gospel!
  • Swig Sigg, cuz Laken Leachin'? So says Yves (he says it's Eve, with Adam's appendages). His research finds one aluminum bottle superior to the other. Val keeps her Klean Kanteen.
  • Bitter, party of one! Julia from Cincinnati thinks Dori would like to try green speed dating. Is Carbon Neutral Love the new Safe Sex?

Hipster Roll-call! We want all you lurkers to make yourselves known by e-mailing us at hip@greenfeet.com. Remember, we don't sell your info and we won't mention you on the show if you're a big chicken! Don't forget to vote for us at podcastalley.com and podcastpickle.com.
