Hip News and Finds

Finds:

  • Get more from your food. Check out this list of weird uses for food around the house and discover how milk can combat ink stains.
  • Find your Temple. Temple the Zen Compound is the greenest nightclub in world and is located in San Francisco. Future plans for the nightclub include installing a Piezoelectric dance floor that harnesses dancers' energy and converts it into electricity. Too cool.
Hip News:
  • "Paper or plastic?" a thing of the past? Grocers are rethinking plastic bags and many might follow in the footsteps of Whole Foods, who recently announced plans to do away with plastic bags all together.
  • Winter X Games go for the green. This year, the Winter X Games will encourage attendees to go green by using cups and plates made from corn plastic, composting leftovers, and turning the grease from the kitchen into biofuel to power the buses and snowcats.
  • Stop and smell the roses. Sam's club will now offer customers Fair Trade Certified flowers.

Teenie Weenie Greenie™

Are you ready to buy a plug-in electric car vehicle that gets 100+ mpg? This week's Teenie Weenie Greenie™ comes from Co-Op America and is to take action to bring plug-in electric vehicles to the market by joining the Adopt-a-Dealer effort. You can download the Adopt-a-Dealer Toolkit and start a conversation with your local car dealer. The toolkit provides you with talking points, sample letters, and a step-by-step guide to get your campaign on the road.

I'm Eating a Clone

The FDA recently announced that they found no evidence of risks in food from healthy cloned animals and their offspring. We're not completely convinced, so Dori and Val decided to investigate a little more. Listen in to hear what they found out. Check out the links below for more information.

Listener Emails

Once again, we have a bunch of great listener emails. Keep 'em rolling in at hip@greenfeet.com. And don't forget to post articles, links, and speak your mind at our MHTH forum!

  • Wormzilla! Michele sent along this juicy article about the giant Palouse earthworm just for Dori. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is trying to get the mammoth worm endangered species status.
  • Dryer drama. Alison has gone 6 months without a dryer and was looking for a good clothesline that doesn't require poles to hang. Val recommends Mrs. Pegg's Handy Line and the Cord-O-Clip automated clothes line.
  • First green homeless shelter opens. Kellie sent an article about the East Oakland Community Project, the nation's first green homeless shelter. The 125-bed shelter will utilize solar power to supply electricity and water-based hydronic heaters for warmth.
  • Wal-Mart Social Manifesto. Brian sent in an article that details a recent speech made by the CEO of Wal-Mart, H. Lee Scott Jr.. The speech laid out the company's plans for tackling several environmental and health issues.
