Hip News and Finds

Finds:

  • Win a 2008 Hybrid Car! Enter the iGo Green Sweepstakes at iVillage.com for a chance to win a 2008 hybrid car.
  • The Mecca of yard sales. If you love yard sales, you don't want to miss out on the Highway 127 Corridor Sale, August 2-5. It's the world's longest yard sale, stretching over five states and 630 miles.
  • Calling for nude volunteers! Artist Spencer Tunick is looking for volunteers to photograph in the nude in an effort to draw attention to the effects of global warming on Switzerland's shrinking glaciers.
News:
  • New developments in solar panels. Researchers at the New Jersey Institute of Technology have developed an inexpensive solar cell that can be printed on plastic sheets.
  • Biofuel from car fumes. Three fishing buddies from North Wales have developed a box that can be fixed underneath a car in place of the exhaust to trap the greenhouse gasses emitted from the vehicle. The captured gasses can then be processed to create a biofuel using genetically modified algae.

Teenie Weenie Greenie™

The first Teenie Weenie Greenie™ of this week comes from EarthEasy.com. Check for hidden leaks by reading your house water meter before and after a two-hour period of no water use. If the meter goes up, you know there is a leak somewhere. The second Teenie Weenie Greenie™ is to buy products with the WaterSense label. The label is authorized by the EPA and represents products that are designed to use less water.

Listener Emails

Once again, we have a bunch of great listener emails. Keep 'em rolling in at hip@greenfeet.com. And don't forget to post articles, links, and speak your mind at our MHTH forum!

  • Hope for Hemp. Kevin passed along an article about conservative residents of South Dakota that are for legalizing the growth of industrial hemp.
  • Can it! Ed found an article about the BigBelly trash can. It is a solar powered public trash can that compacts people's garbage up to six times more than traditional waste receptacles.
  • New life for old plastic bags. Shannon is a fan of MyRecycledBags.com, which has tons of great patterns for crocheting old plastic bags.
  • From the forum. Several listeners were looking for eco-friendly wood finishes. Try Swing Paints or AFM Safecoat.
