More Hip Than Hippie #134 - Visit with a ChicoEco Activist

Beer and Chocolate:

Beer: Sierra Nevada ESB

Chocolate: Some type of chocolate with almonds by United Confectioners sent in by Brent and Tracy in Wisconsin who picked it up while in Russia to adopt their first child. Thanks, and more importantly, CONGRATULATIONS on the new addition to your family!

Hip News and Finds

Finds:

  • Pop it! What's more fun than bubble wrap? Virtual Bubblewrap! Our only advice is to make sure the sound on your computer is turned up because the popping sound is half the fun!
Hip News:
  • We still don't really want to eat it. The FDA has found no safety risks in the meat from healthy cloned cows, pigs, or goats or milk from cloned cows or their offspring.
  • Give it up for Google. Google has announced its core initiatives to combat climate change, poverty, and other emerging threats.
  • Changes at Safeway. Safeway has announced that they will run its U.S. fleet of trucks on biofuel.

Teenie Weenie Greenieā„¢

This week's Teenie Weenie Greenieā„¢ comes from Ines in Connecticut. If you're comfortable that the dish washing soap you use when hand washing dishes is non-toxic, then skip rinsing and just dry it off with a towel. You'll save water!

Visit with a ChicoEco Activist Nani Teves of ChicoEco.org stops by the patio for a chat. Nani is a Chico, California resident who was inspired by Al Gore's famous documentary An Inconvenient Truth and decided to make a difference in her community.

Nani got in contact with a local environmental activist group and, with the help of the organization's webmaster, started ChicoEco.org. ChicoEco is an online community that encourages Chico residents and neighbors to share what they're doing to live more sustainably. People can post upcoming eco-events, find local green businesses, and read environmental news.

One project Nani developed is designed to encourage people to bike more often. Since she lives on a bike route, she created a Bike Station. The station has a sitting bench she got for free and a box that houses a battery operated air pump, patches, and tools for changing a flat. What a brilliant idea! And be sure to check out the projects section for other great ideas to green your community.

Listener Emails

Once again, we have a bunch of great listener emails. Keep 'em rolling in at hip@greenfeet.com. And don't forget to post articles, links, and speak your mind at our MHTH forum!

  • Recycling made easy. Ines discovered a cool compartmentalized recycling bin at the Container Store. It looks like a regular step-on trash can, but inside it has three different compartments for plastic, glass, and cans.
  • Biodegradable foil? Veggy Liz in NYC just got back from her honeymoon in the UK and was seriously impressed by all the eco-friendly things she discovered during her two week trip. One of her favorite discoveries was energy bars wrapped in biodegradable foil.
  • Did you know? Shayna sent along an article about 21 Things You Didn't Know You Can Recycle.
  • Are you a Texan looking for an electric car? Kristi wanted to let all the Texans out there know that she has a relative who is selling an '81 Escort that was factory converted to run off electricity.
  • Spider milking. Dori and Val still won't go there, but Mike sent along a video of spider milking. Also, check out what Mike is building, a shipping container house.
