More Hip Than Hippie #110 - Scary Dairy

Is your dairy 'juiced'? Some farmers are injecting their dairy cows with rBGH, an artificial hormone that increases milk production. The effects of this hormone could be being passed along to you in your dairy.

Beer and Chocolate:

Beer: Schlafly Imperial Stout

Chocolate: Theo Ivory Coast Dark Chocolate Bar 75% sent in by Janet. Thanks Janet!

Hip News and Finds

Finds:

  • Church in a bar? You heard us right! Jill attends worship meetings Tuesdays at the Schlafly Bottleworks Brewery. If you're in Missouri, stop by and check it out!
News:
  • California adopts tough diesel laws. California has put into place the nation's toughest regulations on off-highway diesel vehicles like bulldozers, airport baggage trucks, and ski resort snowcats.

Teenie Weenie Greenie

The first Teenie Weenie Greenie™ of this week comes from Caroline. She uses a wind-up kitchen timer instead of digital one, it's louder and doesn't use batteries. She also started timing her dishwasher so she can stop it and open it to let the dishes air dry.

The second Teenie Weenie Greenie™ is to try using Blackle.com, the energy saving version of Google that uses a black screen. If everyone used Blackle instead of Google, it would save 750 mega-watt hours a year!

Scary Dairy

The following sites have great articles about the concerns and issues surrounding the use of recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone, aka rBGH.

Check out the Organic Consumers Association for a directory of rBGH-free and Organic dairies.

What can you do to make sure rBGH isn't finding its way into your dairy products? The Grace Factory Farm Project has a great list of ways to be proactive, like writing Monsanto and telling them what you think of rBGH. Write Monsanto at:

Monsanto Company
The Agricultural Group
800 N. Lindbergh Blvd.
St. Louis, MO 63167

  • Are you carbon conscious?Listener Rachel wants you to check out New American Dream's Carbon Conscious Consumer campaign, find ways to cut your carbon, and you could win some great eco-prizes!
  • Bottled water. Did you know that last year, Americans spent more money on bottled water than on ipods or movie tickets? Patrick found an interesting article about the bottled water industry.
  • Live with good intentions. Laura wanted to spread the word about a great e-zine she discovered called Good Intentions.
  • A washer/dryer dilemma. Allison was looking for an affordable washer and dryer unit. Val recommends the Equator, it's one unit that doubles and both the washer and dryer.
  • Bag Backlash. The "I'm not a plastic bag" canvas shopping bag has sparked a frenzy all over the world. Marketing Assistant Rachel that Fashion Indie's response to the craze, this PG-13 bag was pretty funny.
